The Challenge
One product that works as a web guide and as native apps people keep on their phones
Streaming choice exploded — Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Max, Apple TV+, Peacock, Paramount+, ESPN, and more but discovery got worse. People bounced between apps, forgot titles they meant to watch, and burned evenings scrolling. ” It was: where can I watch this, on which service I already pay for, and what should I watch next? GatsbyTV Corporation needed more than a brochure site.
tv that could rank for high-intent discovery (movies, TV, sports/live guides, editorial “what to watch” content) while also powering a daily habit on phones. That meant native iOS and Android clients with watchlists, personalized onboarding from what you have already watched, friend recommendations and discussion, and notification-friendly loops not a responsive web wrapper pretending to be an app.
Architecturally, the hard part was coherence. Catalog availability changes by title, region, and subscription. Social and watchlist state has to feel instant across web and mobile. Search and “similar titles” have to stay useful as the catalog and OS versions move.
Starting with a heavyweight custom backend would have slowed the first consumer releases; Firebase was chosen as the operational data and app backbone so accounts, social graph, and activity could ship with the clients — while still leaving room for Node services around search, availability, and product iteration.
Success looked like a live consumer product: App Store presence people actually rate, continuous releases for search quality and platform OS compatibility, and a web surface that earns organic discovery instead of depending only on paid install campaigns.
Our Solution
CodeFlamme engineered the full surface — web, iPhone/iPad, and Android — around discovery, availability, and social watching
CodeFlamme built Gatsby as a cross-platform entertainment guide, not three disconnected codebases bolted together after the fact. tv owns SEO and desktop discovery: browse and search across movies and TV, where-to-stream comparison, sports and live-event guides (including World Cup-style discovery), and editorial guides that help people decide what to watch next.
Native iOS (Swift) and Android (Kotlin) apps carry the always-on experience. Onboarding captures recent watching so recommendations start from real taste, not a blank feed. Watchlists keep “save for later” honest. Social features let friends recommend titles, discuss what they are watching, and stay in the loop without leaving the product.
Push-friendly engagement keeps the guide useful after the first install — the difference between a novelty and a habit. Firebase underpins shared data and app services so identity, social graph, and activity stay coherent across web and mobile.
Around that backbone, product work focused on the moments that make or break a streaming guide: fast search, availability that matches what users can actually play, similar-title discovery when a search is close but not exact, and UI polish (including dark theme work) that feels native on each platform. Ship quality was treated as a feature.
Ongoing App Store releases show the rhythm of a live consumer product — search logic updates, similar-title discovery, notification work, dark theme and icon polish, and compatibility fixes as iOS versions land — rather than a one-off MVP dump. 6 App Store rating across 208 ratings for Gatsby: TV Guide & Tracker .
